Sagreras Studies for Classical Guitar

The Sagreras studies for classical guitar are a set of six books specially designed to help the new guitar student progress step by step.

Each one is intended to cover the six years of classical guitar study. In this way, the technical and harmonic world of the instrument will hold no more secrets for the future master. 

That said, these books have been somewhat forgotten nowadays, and newer methods have been chosen in their place.

The Sagreras methods for classical guitar were created by the great Argentine master Julio Salvador Sagreras. Among his other works, we also find the piece "Colibrí" (Hummingbird) for guitar.

First, we'll take a look at the first three Sagreras studies for classical guitar, and in a later section we'll cover the other three. 

First Sagreras study for classical guitar

The first Sagreras study for classical guitar is designed to help the developing player become familiar with reading music and with the strings of the guitar. 

The first eight lessons take you through the open strings, and then, from lesson 9 to lesson 35, the book introduces the fingerboard and the placement of these notes on the staff. 

From lesson 36 onward, the tempo picks up to make way for speed and skill in performance. 

After that, from lesson 37, the student can begin to practice intervals on the guitar and how to read them on the staff. 

Natural scales, double stops, arpeggios, and the first melodies are what will accompany the new guitarist through to the end of this book. 

Second Sagreras study for classical guitar

The second Sagreras book for classical guitar begins to tackle short excerpts of easy compositions for students. 

Here you'll find: 

• Air de Barcarolle in a melancholic tempo.
• A Zamba tempo
• An Andantino tempo
• A Larghetto tempo with sustained, held-over notes. 
• Andante Tranquilo
• A slow Waltz tempo.

Among many others, the goal of Book 2 of Sagreras for classical guitar is for the student to learn and perform their first compositions and guitar forms within chamber music.

Third Sagreras study for classical guitar

The third Sagreras book for classical guitar begins to explore non-standard tunings so the new student can venture into fresh harmonic territory with new compositions in Andante. 

We won't lie to you: the third book has enough material to keep you burning the midnight oil and practicing for hours on end. 

Technique takes a special place in Book 3 by the composer of Colibrí, because the classical tremolo enters the scene so you can start exploring the speed your fingers are capable of producing. 

This way, Book 3 moves between sparkling arpeggios and tremolos that will bring a smile to your face—and maybe a few gray hairs as well.
