How to use the chord dictionary

Choose your instrument (guitar, ukulele or piano), the root note (C, D, E…) and the chord type (major, minor, seventh, maj7, sus…). You will instantly see the diagram with the correct fingering, the notes that make up the chord, and you can hear it by pressing play. On guitar and ukulele we show several positions (voicings) so you can pick the most comfortable; on piano the exact keys light up. All free, no sign-up and right in your browser — perfect to learn, compose or review.

    Frequently asked questions

    What is the chord dictionary?

A free web tool that shows how to play guitar, ukulele and piano chords. Pick a root note and a chord type and it shows the diagram with the fingering, the notes it contains and its sound, right in your browser with no install.

How do I read the chord diagram?

On guitar and ukulele the vertical lines are the strings and the horizontal ones the frets. Dots show where to put your fingers (the number is the finger: 1 index, 2 middle, 3 ring, 4 pinky). An "X" on top means a string you don't play and an "O" an open string. On piano the chord keys light up.

    Can I hear the chord?

Yes. Press the play button (▶) and the chord will sound so you can compare your tuning and fingering with the correct sound. Each position or inversion has its own button.

    Which chords does it include?

All chords in the 12 keys: major, minor, seventh (7), maj7, m7, sus2, sus4, diminished, augmented, sixths, ninths, add9, 6/9 and many more, with several positions (voicings) per chord on guitar and ukulele.

Is it free and no sign-up?

Yes, completely free, no sign-up and no limits. Look up and learn as many chords as you want, as often as you want.

    Does it work on mobile?

Yes, it works on PC, tablet and mobile (iOS and Android) right in the browser, with no apps to install.
