    How to read and use intervals

    An interval has a number and a quality. The number is counted spanning the note names from lowest to highest (from C to E there are three names: C-D-E, so it is a third). The quality depends on the exact semitones: the third can be major (4 semitones) or minor (3). Fourths, fifths and octaves are "perfect". Intervals are the building blocks of music: two stacked thirds form a chord, a sequence of them draws a melody, and their tension or rest defines harmony. Use the 2-note mode to identify any distance, and the builder mode to find the note at a given interval. Hear them in harmonic mode to recognize them by ear.

    What is a musical interval?

    An interval is the distance between two notes. It is measured two ways: by its number (second, third, fourth, fifth…) depending on how many note names it spans, and by its quality (major, minor, perfect, augmented, diminished). For example, from C to G is a perfect fifth (7 semitones).

    How do I use the calculator?

    Choose the lower and upper note and the tool tells you the interval name, its quality and how many semitones. You can also use reverse mode: start from a note and add an interval (for example "a major third above C") to find the resulting note.

    Can I hear the intervals?

    Yes. You can play the two notes one after another (melodic) or at the same time (harmonic). Hearing an interval is the best way to learn to recognize it by ear, a key skill for musicians.

    What is the difference between perfect and major/minor intervals?

    Fourths, fifths and octaves (and the unison) are called "perfect" because they have only one natural form. Seconds, thirds, sixths and sevenths can be major or minor depending on whether they have one semitone more or less. Augmenting or diminishing any of them adds or removes an extra semitone.

    Is it useful for studying harmony and composing?
