    How to compose a score online step by step

    No installation and no advanced music theory needed: follow these steps and in a few minutes you'll have your score playing.

    1. Set the clef, key, time signature and instrument: the key signature draws itself on the staff.
    2. Write the notes by picking a note value and clicking on the staff, or play them on your computer keyboard or a MIDI keyboard.
    3. Add chords, triplets and other tuplets, ties, articulations and dynamics to give the piece expression.
    4. Drag any note to fine-tune its pitch, or select a whole block to copy, paste or transpose it to another key.
    5. Listen to the score with the cursor following the notes, then export it to PDF, MIDI, WAV or an image once it's ready.
    6. Save your score with a free account and publish it so the community can discover it.

    How does it compare to Finale or MuseScore?

    This editor runs on its own engine, it isn't MuseScore or Finale, so don't expect every advanced feature from those desktop programs. But it covers what most people need for a guitar, piano, choir or band score: multiple voices, chords, tuplets, ties, articulations and dynamics, plus exporting to PDF, MIDI, WAV and image, and importing MusicXML files. The difference is that here you don't need to install anything or pay for a license: it all runs free in the browser. For a very long orchestral score or highly detailed engraving, those desktop programs will still give you more room.

    Frequently asked questions

    How do I write a score with the editor?

    Pick a value in the Notes tab (from whole to thirty-second) and click the staff at the height you want: the note is placed and sounds. You can drag any note to change its pitch, select several with Shift and copy, paste or transpose the block. The professional score is engraved below in real time.

    Can I write chords, triplets, quintuplets and ties?

    Yes. Chord mode stacks notes on the same beat; the tuplet selector creates triplets, quintuplets, sextuplets or septuplets; and you have ties, slurs and grace notes. Also double dots, ottava (8va), fingering and free text such as Andante or rit.

    Can I import and export my scores?

    Yes. Import MusicXML (.xml or .musicxml) or ABC files to keep working on them, and export to PDF, MIDI, SVG image or WAV audio. You can also print directly.

    Are my scores saved to my account?

    If you are signed in, you can save your scores to your account and reopen them from "My scores" on any device. You can also publish them so other musicians in the community can see them. Without an account, the editor saves your work in the browser.

    What clefs, keys and voices are supported?

    Treble, bass and alto clefs; all major and minor keys with their key signature drawn; meters from 2/4 to 12/8 with optional pickup; up to 4 independent voices and a piano grand staff (treble and bass braced). You choose the playback instrument and tempo.

    Is it free with no install?

    Yes, completely free, no registration required, and it works in the browser on PC, tablet and mobile with touch. The score is drawn on your own device.

    Can I write with a MIDI keyboard?

    Yes. Connect your keyboard with the "Connect MIDI keyboard" button and every key you play is added as a note at the cursor position, using the note value you have selected.

    Does it work on mobile?

    Yes. Tap the staff with your finger to place a note and drag it to fine-tune it; the whole palette of note values, chords and dynamics is designed for a small screen.
