How to compose a score online step by step

Set up your piece first: clef, key (the key signature draws itself), meter, instrument and tempo. In the Notes tab pick the value and click the staff: the note is placed at that height and sounds; the blue ghost always shows where it will land and which note it is. Chord mode stacks notes on the same beat, Triplet mode groups in threes, and with ties and slurs you join notes or whole phrases. In Articulation you have accidentals, staccato, accents, fermatas, trills and mordents; in Dynamics, from pianissimo to fortissimo with hairpins; and in Bars, repeats, 1st/2nd endings and final bar lines. Select any note to tune it with the arrows, add lyrics or a chord symbol, or delete it. Everything is engraved below as a professional score with your key signature and lyrics, ready to play with a cursor, download as MIDI, save as an image or print. And relax: the editor autosaves your work in your browser.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I write a score with the editor?

Pick a value in the Notes tab (whole, half, quarter, eighth, sixteenth or thirty-second) and click the staff at the height you want: the note is placed and sounds. With the other tabs you add articulations, dynamics, repeat bars and more. The professional score is engraved below in real time.

Can I write chords, triplets and ties?

Yes. Turn on Chord mode and each click stacks notes at the same beat; turn on Triplet and notes group in threes with their bracket; the Tie joins the selected note to the next and slurs span whole phrases. There are also grace notes.

How do I add lyrics and chord symbols?

Select a note and type the lyric syllable or the chord symbol (for example Am7) in the edit bar: the lyric shows under the note and the symbol above it, both in the editor and in the final score.

What keys, meters and clefs are supported?

All the usual major and minor keys (with their key signature drawn), meters from 2/4 to 12/8, treble, bass and alto clefs, tempo from 40 to 208 and two independent voices (for example melody plus accompaniment in bass clef). You also choose the playback instrument.

Is my score saved? Can I download it?

The editor autosaves your work in your browser, so you can close and continue later. When you finish, play it back with the cursor following the notes, download the MIDI for any music software, save the image or print it to paper or PDF.

Is it free with no install?

Yes, completely free, no sign-up and it works in the browser on desktop and tablet. The score is drawn and saved on your own device: your music is not uploaded to any server.
